Say hello to the newest additions to FH:

Acme Calico Cat, JoeySparks the Pikawolf, and Mondscheine Dragon!

More pictures at www.FurrHappens.com !

Acme's bodysuit had over 100+ pieces and was a definite test of patience to put together. Joey has LED's in his cheeks that light up, and Mondscheine has tons of UV airbrushing, and glows with spots and highlights when under black-light.

Thanks everyone for your patience so far with my move ^^. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!

Subject: Best fur for a buckskin horse?
Security: Public

Sorry if this has been asked before. I couldn't find anything in the memories :)
I'm looking for something to medium or long length. Price being no issue. I'm looking for the main tan color of fur on a buckskin horse. (This is a buckskin for those that may be wondering, canaryzoo.com/Horse%20Colours/colour%20buckskin.jpg

I found these solid long hair fabrics from Distinctive Fabrics:
distinctivefabric.com/images/products/color/jpg/sldlghrfur1_camel.jpg
distinctivefabric.com/images/products/color/jpg/sldlghrfur1_beige.jpg

And then this.

But I don't know if any of those would work nicely? If you've ever used those furs please let me know how it worked out for you. And please, if you have a better alternative go ahead and tell!

Thanks <3

Subject: Taxidermy Parts - Rug shells!
Security: Public

Hi!

So I've been thinking of building my first proper fursuit head in the future, and it occurred to me. What about taxidermy rug-shells or shoulder-mounts? I know that, for example, some animal forms are way too small.

In the case of my Versin fursuit in progress/renovations, I'd be using a wolf shoulder mount's head, or a rugshell preferably with its whole head. I was imagining that- since they're made of foam- I'd hollow it out and attach to balaclava mask, sever the jaw and make it moveable to my real jaw, and insert taxidermy jawset and sculpt where necessary/attach horns/add fur/etc.

I'm going for as realistic as I can get, but I suck at carving foam and can't afford to do the cast-method that Qarrezel and Beetlecat do (for example: they are my inspirations). I figure it'll be really hot, and plan to install a small fan in the muzzle. The main thing I have to do is measure properly. I'm pretty sure fitting will be fine, but I wanted to drop the idea to see if anyone's had experiences with this.

Has anyone experimented with this?

Thanks much. :)

Hey guys,

I'm in need of light blue/sky blue matte vinyl for an upcoming project, but the only place I've been able to find actual yards of fabric (that isn't meant for advertising or something) is Mjtrends.com and they tell me they will not be restocking it.

I need matte vinyl because otherwise it'd be wayyyy too shiny; I'm not going for a fetish gear look or anything flashy.

Does anybody know where I can find it? I didn't think it'd be this difficult. I looked into vinyl paints/dyes, but for something I'll be wearing around, I'm not too enthusiastic about the idea and I've heard mixed reactions on how well it stays on things mostly stationary (car seats), much less a costume outfit.

A blue close to this (doesn't need to be exact, but not much darker):

hand sewn markings this time. handsewing is a pain, but for me it is actually cutting out and lining up the pieces that drives me nuts,  i had the markings drawn on the backing and i would cut and replace 5 inch segments at a time with the spirals because i knew that if i cut out and tried to sew it in as a whole piece i would screw it up. looking through moo's FA gallery every piece of art had different tattoos with some big style differences so i got permission to create my own design and got it approved before it was sewn in. Moo does not have black under the eyes in any of the art BUT the large mesh vewiports means vision is quite excellent in this mask <3 Also he has some really nice wiggle ears, they came out so nice and bouncy.

Subject: Scaly/Talon Handpaws?

Tags:paws, scales

Hey all,

I noticed there are precious few (if any) posts about scaly handpaws in the memories. I've been working on my gryphon partial, and I'm finding myself a bit perplexed as to how to handle them. They're supposed to be scaly, rather than furry, and are presenting a problem as to how to make them. I've been experimenting sewing my own below-the-elbow gloves out of upholstery vinyl, which turned out decent enough and at least felt sort of like leathery skin, but the problem there comes with the scales (which I very much would like; I'd paint them on if I had to, but wouldn't it be so much cooler to have actual scale topography on the gloves?). I'm almost certain cutting out the individual scales and hot-gluing them on would be a disaster, particularly at articulating places like the knuckles and wrists. Conversely, it seems to me that sewing them on would be as conspicuous as it would be time-consuming.

Here's a drawing of my ideal glove:

I looked online for costume dragon/reptile/bird hands and came up with this, which would work in a pinch I guess besides being the wrong color...except the scales don't go up the forearm and it isn't a below-the-elbow length glove.

Does anyone know a way I can make a scaly glove? I wouldn't know the first place to begin making a rubber or latex costume glove like the latter I just showed, although that would be the best fix if I could somehow poof it into existence I think. Does anyone have any other ideas for a way I can make a scaly glove to fit my specifications (wider scales on the top of the forearm, hands, and fingers, claws, below-the-elbow length), or clever way to attach scales to an existing glove? As a last resort, does anyone know anyone that makes and/or sells these?

Thanks so much for the help!

How are they done? What are they made out of? Is this better for mask blanks to sell/use on other masks rather than a one-time thing? Do you carve them, make a negative of them, then cast them in plastic? How light/heavy are they, and how easy/comfortable are they to wear?

I am making a feline suit and I ordered plastic bear claws to cut to length and paint to use as claws. I've cut them, but I was looking at them and I thought "How do I attach these so they don't fall off?" Since they are trimmed at the end, there's nothing really to hold them on securely from the inside of the paw, and since they are plastic I am afraid hot glue won't be enough.

EDIT: Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I ended up poking a couple holes in the claws near the bottom (using a yarn needle heated over a candle) so I can sew them in. I would have drilled them if I had a drill or was patient enough to wait until I could borrow one. I also will hot glue the claws just to make sure they don't come loose. I think I am too paranoid with claws, but oh well.

Sup guys,

I've been trying to find a good way not to change my voice in any way, but simply to digitize it and make it sound like a creepy monotone computer or radio comm voice or something. Deepening my voice would be cool, too, but really not necessary considering it'd make me happy enough just to warp it.

So, is this something you can do with a voice-changer, or are there other devices that will warp/digitize your voice in realtime that could be made to work with a costume?

By the way, this costume would not be a fursuit, it would be full-body futuristic armor with helmet; there would probably be slightly more extra room in the helmet than in a fursuit head, but not much.

I found this picture a while ago somewhere, don't remember where though :\
but maybe someone could make a diagram or something with it, showing how it would look with tear duct vision?

And would you be able to make a moving jaw..?
And how would I go about installing the eyes?
How do I put the tear ducts in?

Sorry for all these questions, just wanna learn as much as I can haha

I'm looking for scraps of medium to long-pile wolf-colored fur to make a tail for my Max (Where the Wild Things Are) pajamas. I can sew scraps together to make the size piece I need to work with, so I'd be happy with those. They need to add up to something close to 30"X10" though, ideally, or just be that size to begin with! If anyone has that kind of fur to spare please let me know, I can pay by PayPal, art trade, crafty items or fursuit parts (DeviantArt gallery at www.webdragon.deviantart.com). Please comment here or drop me a line at drakeducaine@yahoo.com.

Hi, I have another quick question, does anyone know of any brands of balaclavas that are ideal for use as a head base? I would really appreciate links if possible! For my current head, I used a ski mask, but I found that the knit tends to fray, and the hot glue easily seeps through it, which burns. :/

Thank you.

But I want to make a fullsuit of a "My Little Pony" to wear to a pony con and also to otakon in Baltimore next summer...I want to take my little sis in law and that would be a great outfit to go in.
I do have experience with heads and tails, so I guess I am looking for a trade. Someone to make me a body suit (simple xlarge jumpsuit..no dtd, just the mcalls or butterwick or whatever pattern!) in exchange for a head or tail, or even something else, art...plushie...anything I can make for this skill. I can even provide the fur! I need the outfit by the end of April. Anyone game? email me at candycornsnake@yahoo.com for pictures of my past work!

Has anyone done a half mask? Where it's literally a mask, nothing on you head, just on your face? Like a Mardi Gras mask. I'm going to be making a kind of partial that turns into a fullsuit (way in the future, but I've started it because it'll take forever to make.)

Making a hat that has ears on it, and fluffs out (like the buffalo hat that Beetlecat made), and if I ever want to go full-on, I can just put on the mask, and then the hat. Has anyone done this before? If not, any ideas how to "connect" them so that when they are worn you won't see the seam on the forehead? How to make it not fall off my face when I move? A moving jaw would be awesome, but not needed. Would I connect the neck to the face, or to the "body" when I get around to making that portion?

And just to clear the air: No, I'm not going to use real fur. I don't use real fur (response to comments from last post I made.)

One last thing; how strong are drawer tracks? Enough to support something 90-110 pounds?

Hey guys! To make a long story short, I was lucky enough to find nearly the exact colors I wanted for my suit at a JoAnn's, I was however, UNfortunate enough to not buy enough and run out. In retrospect I don't mind because it was mostly an impulse buy and the fur is much less quality and too short a pile than I'd prefer to use anyways. Here's what I used (don't mind the sloppy pinning job). DF's Grey should be fine for the lighter grey but I haven't been able to find a darker grey I really like. Monterey Mill's Slate Seal is pretty close to the color I'm aiming for but I don't want seal/short pile (or to pay for 14 yards I don't need).

I guess the point of all this is, does anyone know of a decent solid dark grey? All I've found in longer piles is light grey and black. Nothing in between.

Whinnyhi.

Thanks for all your great comments. Limited computer time here so making replies this way.

First, we need more horseys (fursuits).

I plan on taking photos next Spring on my bike (old, stripped-down Goldwing) and also on my horse (Tonka) in suit.

Like the idea of a biker bandanna on my head. Tried and tried to come up with a way for any hat (biker, cowboy) to work and fit down over the top of my fursuit head and have places (holes maybe) for ears but no luck so far. I know Brokken made his wonderful Clyde fursuit a cowboy hat that looks good so it is doable.

Hooves. Took a pair of cheap Walmart loafers (Earth Shoe it says inside) and bandsawed the heels about half-way flatwise so only the bottoms came off. Added wooden blocks to raise the heels about two inches and cemented the original heel cut-offs to the bottoms of the wooden blocks which are cemented to the remaining heels on the shoes. Thus high-heeled loafers. Then used spray foam (Great Stuff) in layers over the fronts of the loafers and let each layer set firm before adding the next. Built up to the rough shape but oversize, of hooves. Then sanded and sanded to shape for hind hooves (sort of a diamond shape whereas front hooves are round).

I had purchased a set of number 7 hinds horse shoes with toe clips and used them as a pattern for the bottom and thus the face shapes of the hooves to sand to. Then layers of fiberglass cloth and rosin to make fiberglass shells about 1/4 inch thick over the face of the hooves. Of course I allowed for the 1/4 inch increase in size when sanding the foam so the final product fit the shoes nicely. Polished the shoes and coated with coats of clear spray (Rust-oleum crystal clear enamel - very tough and good for this I also used in for my eyes).

Sanded the bottoms of the hooves flat on a big belt sander but it could be done by hand and epoxy and nailed them on exactly as a horse hoof trimmer (farrier) would have done with horse shoe nails. Heh... I wanted a proper job. Dense foam rubber then cemented in the center of the horse shoe that slightly raises the shoe off the floor. The shoes click on hard floors slightly, which I and most folks like. Was a lot of work but worth it. The left one rubs my big toe too much so buying a set of shoe-stretchers in hopes that will help. Next time I would press crumpled newspapers into the loafers prior to putting the foam layers over the fronts to keep the shape and prevent it pushing in anywhere. Painted the hooves with grey spray primer and then with acrylics by hand. I wanted the 'grain' of the hooves to show and checked out many photos as well as my own horse's white hooves to get the coloring right. Heh, I get more comments about the hooves than anything else.

The next furson who asks me "Why the long face?" is gonna get kicked.

Yes the mouth opens and closes with teeth and tongue inside. Tongue is carved from a piece of balsa and painted with acrylics. I have to fit my chin into a chinstrap that has foam padding and is part of the jaw with springs to close. So when I open my mouth and lower my chin the horse jaw opens.

The ears are meant to be moveable from front perked to flat back but they are a retrofit. The bearings are not at the right angle so really needs to be incorperated into a new head during construction to be effective. For now they are spring-loaded to the perk position.

The photos were taken by Tivo, the Clydesdale librarian, at his farm in Illinois.

From your comments I feel encouraged to continue. How about a gunslinger or cowboy outfit for riding my horse?

Steed

Hey ya'll
Photobucket
I made another critter. I had tree days off in a row, so, I managed to crank this Leopard out. A picture )

This is in what I call the "magnifying glass, and tweezers" stage. I still have a few things to do that will make it look cleaner. Though, it will not look vastly different from the picture.

Love ya!

I've been asked by a good friend if I could make a plushie of his fursuit for his boyfriend.

This fursuit here. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/1848874/

I know I'd be able to do the body and the eyes and the tail, but the head is going to bother me. Should I carve out a teeny fursuit head and fur it? I was just going to sew and stuff the rest of it.

Any help on this matter. It's not fursuit, but it's related.

Subject: Parade Soles?
Security: Public

I'm working on my feet at the moment and my method of using cheap car floormats for parade soles and foamies for pawpads do no work nor look good. XD I need a better way!

What kind of material do you put on the bottoms of your feet? Specifically to endure indoor and outdoor romps.
Can it be bought online?
Is it lightweight?
How long does it generally last?

And..

What do you use for making pawpads for feet? Is there a way to protect them so that they don't get dirty, break, or get scuffed away?

Thanks in advance! :D

A new Puppy we finished up recently. :) Tried a few new things on this suit we haven't done before, such as larger toonier style eyes to add to the puppyish and happy expression. She also sports an extra curly foam core tail which curls over the top.

More Puppy Pics Here :D )

Hello, I think I saw a thread about a how to make a peacock tail a while back, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyway, I am making a peacock dress, and woul like a tail to go with it, but I would like the tail to be able to go up and down like a real peacock tail. I would also like to use real peacock feathers, I am technical but I don't get technical lanugue.

SO if any of you have a link to the old post, but if not can you answer my question...How do you make a peacock tail with real feathers, that is able to go up and down?

Thanks

To start off, I have been watching the forums here for quite some time, and now I'm looking to start making a costume, but, I have a huge problem: making my feet. I will be making this costume: Freya from FFIX ). I would really like to make the costume complete with semi-accurate feet like she has, but so far I am having no luck finding a website that will explain how to make this visual trick possible. My friend has suggested I work off of clear heels for the lift, but I've seen some of your guys' work, and I know there are other ways :P Thank you in advance! (even something as simple as a link would do wonderfully!)

Subject: Resin mask blank - Pricing Question
Security: Public

Hi guys; I figured I should post this here rather than in Fursuit Auctions because I'm not actually selling anything yet. Still, feel free to ask me to move the post elsewhere!

I've been trying to figure out a fair price to ask for mask blanks of my canine-styled mold. It isn't the best sculpt, as it was my first, and its best strength is probably its versatility-- foam and the like can be added to bulk up the cheeks/brow/whatever, or left off for a very slim look.

I've been keeping an eye on what more experienced artists charge for mask blanks, and I know I shouldn't charge as much. Here are a ton of photos; this particular cast is uncut/cleaned (the eye holes and sides of mask haven't been cut off/out, and the jaw has not been separated). I would definitely cut and clean casts to sell, however, but my tools are at home and I couldn't do it for this cast until next week.

More and larger pics under the cut!

Thanks!

Tags:papermache

I'm wanting to make a face mask, not a fursuit head, for a unicorn costume! I've seen some amazing leather ones, but I don't think I want to play around with expensive materials yet!

I'm thinking of building up a wire frame using sunglasses as a base with an additional support strap or two around my head. I'll probably be trying to make the horn, ears, and wig detachable for ease of transport.

Is paiper mache an option? I remember it being really uneven and messy looking in middle school art projects, and I want something I can make very smooth. Is paperclay or something an option? Anyone have any ideas?

<3!

Subject: Odd question.
Security: Public
Mood:thoughtful thoughtful

Edit: Just to clear up a bit. I do NOT use real fur. I find using a real skull odd, just like I find using real fur odd. Again, I do NOT use real fur, I will not use real fur. Muddle Designs will never use real fur. Thank you. [/edit]

Swan partial done. Not 100% happy with it. I had to change the wings, she didn't like the foam idea. I think they look silly, but she's happy with them. And that's the point. Will post pictures when there's a camera. Saving foam for my own wings one day.

Odd question here for you all. I've had a suit in mind for a very very long time. Even before I was a fur. Just... something I've been thinking about. Now that I'm learning about costume making, I thought I'd start on it (VERY slowly, and it'll wait until after FC.) But good to gather information so I can just attack when it's time.

Does anyone know where to get plastic animal skulls? I don't want a real one, I'm making edits to it and would feel bad doing that to an animal, plus it's kind of odd to use something like a real skull, real fur is odd enough (to me.) I'm looking for a huge deer skull, or moose skull. Preferably with detachable antlers. A moose would be better because of the size, but it needs deer antlers, so I wasn't sure. It needs to be big enough to fit a human head inside the skull cavity with some editing to the bottom of the skull. You don't have to see, per-say, but at least fit comfortably in. As macabre as that sounds/is.

I was thinking of building one, but I like the tiny details that the skull has that are hard/imposable to replicate in foam. So a casting of a skull would be better. I need it to look as life-like as I can get. Ideas?

IF this is possible, I'll post up a character sheet and see if anyone has ideas on how to do some of the other parts.

My question is pretty straight forward. I'm ordering longer fur this Friday to work on building a body suit and my question is, how do you keep it from clumping up in the sewing machine?
